Why Young Professionals Love Central Arkansas

Few places reward ambition like central Arkansas. That’s partly because of the area’s low population relative to its opportunities. Little Rock and the surrounding communities are large enough to support big business and the opportunity for advancement that comes with them, but there’s less competition for those jobs. Additionally, dozens of mid-sized regional and local businesses hunger for talent, and it’s even easier to get recognized by them.
Secondly, in central Arkansas, you get more bang for all those bucks you owe in student loans. That’s because on a percentage basis, there are fewer college-educated professionals here than in similarly sized communities. A degree opens doors here that it may not elsewhere.
And being a community of less than a million people, you’re bound to frequently bump into the people you’ve met previously. If you make the effort, this dynamic can help you rapidly expand your network to include mid-level executives. While you might not be wining and dining with the big wigs in your first few months, you can make the connections that will lead you toward your dream job in short order.
Before you hit the rungs, here are a few things to keep in mind:
In this market, there’s a void for educated, young professionals. While you might have to take an entry-level position to start, put that salary in perspective. It costs less to live here than in other cities with similar career promise. Feel you’re not getting noticed at work fast enough? Further your education. Institutions like the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and Pulaski Technical College cater to working professionals. And if your employer won’t help foot the bill, reach for the big pot of scholarship money from area donors.
Several 20- and 30-year-olds have successfully risen to the top of the corporate ladder here and still enjoy the same activities as peers who are still climbing. That means chances are good that you bump into one of them at Ciao Baci, a Hillcrest nightspot that’s popular among the who’s who of the area’s younger set. Other casual hot spots for locating this type of crowd include Ferneau, Cajun’s Wharf and the Hillcrest Fountain. Whether you bump into a decision-maker by chance or by design, a little elbow-rubbing goes a long way.
Looking for a more formal fast track to a corner office? Then join Create Little Rock, the Little Rock Regional Chamber’s new rising professionals program. Slightly different than your normal young pro’s group, Create Little Rock seeks to retain, attract and grow talented young professionals to enhance the region’s economic development. The networking opportunities are endless, but maybe more valuable is the opportunity to contribute to the group’s efforts. Who knows who you might impress with your ideas?
Everyone knows community service pads résumés better than wide margins and generous spacing. Fundraisers for local nonprofits account for several dates on the area’s social calendar – a favorite is the Arkansas Repertory Theatre’s “Brew Ha Ha.” You’re likely going to go to these events anyway, so why not help plan and organize them? And if you become so active you’re eventually chairing events, putting in your two cents can pay big dividends. Just think what having your feature photo in Soirée, the philanthropy-favoring premier city magazine, would do for your stock.
