Notable Neighbors: Charles Morgan, Downtown
Entrepreneur and Fort Smith native Charles Morgan didn’t start off in Metro Little Rock, but has called either Little Rock or Conway home for much of his life. After a childhood steeped in the business world helping out with his family’s motel and supply business, he went on to get his degree in engineering from the University of Arkansas and relocated to Metro Little Rock in 1966. Since then, he’s been at the helm of Little Rock-based Acxiom Corp., a business intelligence firm with offices in 12 countries. These days Morgan is executive chairman of PrivacyStar, a start-up offering security and information protection apps for smartphones.
What sets the Little Rock business scene apart?
There are fewer impediments to success in Metro Little Rock than other parts of the country. What surprises me most about the workforce in the metro area is the amount of skilled people available compared to only a few years ago. We have a very responsive attitude in government and education to cooperate with businesses here.
Why did you choose downtown condo living?
The convenience factor in the River Market Tower is huge (they pick up and deliver your laundry!) and you can leave for days or even weeks at a time without worrying about security for your family and possessions. The added bonus is all the nice folks in the building who create a social “neighborhood-like” atmosphere.
I love Little Rock’s downtown scene with all the restaurants and things to do. From the opening of the Clinton Presidential Park Bridge to new hotels and shops going in all the time, it’s all creating a very rich downtown culture that I just love.
How has your experience working in metro Little Rock shaped you as a person and businessman?
Anytime you are raised and run a business in the South, Southern values hold true and people around the world appreciate how you treat them in business. I’ve observed many favorable responses to our more polite and respectful Southern ways of conducting business.
