Notable Neighbors: Mitch & Elizabeth Breitweiser
For the past seven years, Mitch Breitweiser has been sketching the sinewy muscles and the indestructible shield of comic book superhero Captain America. For the past three, Mitch’s wife, Elizabeth, has been in on the game as well. As freelance illustrators for Marvel Comics, the couple holds down east coast jobs without leaving their downtown Little Rock condo.
Both Arkansas natives and graduates of Harding University’s art program, they make a dynamic duo. “I provide the black and white illustrations,” says Mitch, “and Elizabeth provides the color.” Here, the couple shares why they’re happy to call Little Rock home.
Mitch, how did you two land this gig?
I decided at a really young age to become a comic book illustrator, but it took a move to New York City and several years of portfolio reviews and rejection letters to land a full-time gig. Elizabeth was an art teacher and painter when we got married. I talked her into coloring some samples for Marvel, and they gave her work pretty much immediately. We spend most of our time working on “Captain America” comics, and Elizabeth is also the regular colorist on “Hulk.”
What do you love most about downtown Little Rock?
It’s great to be within walking distance of the River Market and a quick drive from all of the happenings in The Heights and Hillcrest.
What is the local art community like?
There are lots of creative people around town, and the local artwork is surprisingly sophisticated, but with a dash of folkish irony.
Any advice or tips for Metro Little Rock newcomers?
Take advantage of the farmers markets. Our neighbors need our money more than big-agri does, plus it just tastes better!
Best local event?
For the past few years, we have participated in the annual Candlelighters of Central Arkansas charity auction to benefit families affected by childhood cancer, but I would be remiss if I didn’t mention River City Comic Con.
Local Favorites
- Restaurants: Elizabeth has a gluten allergy that makes it tough sometimes to eat out. Fortunately, Little Rock has an increasing number of gluten-friendly restaurants. Bossa Nova has to be our favorite, but Sushi Café and Star of India are close runner-ups. And Dempsey’s Bakery (also gluten-free) is just a couple of blocks from our condo.
- Art galleries: Stephano’s Fine Art Gallery in The Heights. Elizabeth used to display her work there until the busy publishing schedule cut into her painting time. They keep a body of my original comic book pages for public viewing. There’s always a good time to be had at their frequent soirées.
